Can ChatGPT Do Architectural Renderings?

ChatGPT alone cannot produce useable architectural renderings for planning, marketing, or design purposes. Its image generation capability, powered by models like DALL-E or GPT Image, generates plausible-looking scenes from text descriptions, but it cannot read a floor plan, match a real site, work from a CAD file, or control the geometry of the building it depicts. Every image it produces invents its own architecture.

The practical limitations are significant. An AI-generated image cannot show a specific rear extension on a real house because the model has no information about the house's dimensions, orientation, existing roof form, or the materials specified in the planning application. The proportions, window positions, and massing will be approximate at best and wrong at worst. For a planning submission, a fabricated image with no evidential connection to the drawings submitted with the application has no value and could potentially be misleading to a planning officer.

For marketing purposes, the same limitation applies. An off-plan buyer, a mortgage lender, or an investor expecting to see a specific building on a specific site cannot be served by an AI image that invents the geometry. The image must match the approved drawings, the specification, and the site context so that what is shown can be built as depicted.

What AI tools can help with in a professional architectural context is narrower but genuinely useful. Moodboard generation, style exploration, and quick concept sketching at the earliest design stage are areas where AI image tools add speed without requiring accuracy. Generating reference images of material palettes, lighting moods, or landscape styles before a brief is finalised is a legitimate use. Several UK studios use AI-generated moodboards as a briefing tool with clients before commencing the production CGI workflow.

Serious UK studios use AI as an ideation and research aid, then build the actual production scene in 3D from the architect's model so every window position, brick coursing, and roof pitch matches the drawings. The authoritative architectural render in 2025 remains CAD-accurate, human-directed, and produced from a verified 3D model. That will remain true for as long as planning authorities and marketing standards require images that correspond to real buildings.
